For the Municipality of Milan, we have carried out the museum fit-out for the Egyptian Gallery at the Castello Sforzesco, a complex project comprising 50 display cases fitted with passive humidity control systems and a sophisticated lighting system. The fit-out design is by architect Markus Scherer, whilst the lighting design was overseen by Studio Ferrara Palladino. The space unfolds through a sequence of large burnished steel walls that extend up to the ceiling, marking out the route and creating an immersive and evocative experience. At the heart of the exhibition route stand 13 tower-like display cases, approximately 3 metres high: veritable glass boxes finished in Brera stone, a limestone also used for the supports of the artefacts, each of which has been custom-designed. To house the precious Busca Papyrus, a dedicated display case over 7 metres long has also been created, designed to allow the papyrus to be viewed in its entirety as it lies outstretched along its full length. To display a number of sarcophagi and a mummy, we have created display cases fitted with a system for extracting the display shelf, thus ensuring that these extremely delicate artefacts can be handled in complete safety. Multimedia stations are situated along the route to provide further information on certain sections, whilst the descriptive panels have been printed directly onto bleached cedar wood panels and burnished steel plates.
